Miriam rocks!

I've just returned from a weekend (fri night-sun aftnn) Genting trip with morris to see a totally awesome Miriam Yeung concert. The whole trip- concert tickets, coach ride, hotel accomodation, costs only about $150. Basically, all the expenses for the trip added up to less than S$200.

I'm gonna break down the different aspects of the trip, rate it, and at the same time share some of my pics.

The coach ride

Coach ride

The good:
  • Wide business class seats with generous leg space.
  • Hassle free and transit free. Goes right up to the genting hotel itself.

The bad:

  • Lack of amenities. The only entertainment available were 3 shared TVs showing VCDs.
  • Bad choice of movie screening. Not only were the movies unknown, the screen timings were bad. On the way there, they were playing some Jean Claude van damme action movie- 2am in the morning. The screams, gunfire and explosions kept everybody awake. On the way back, they screened some 1980s cantonese flick (without dubbing or subtitles) that i doubt more than half the bus understood.

Rating:

6/10 - For S$75, I was hoping for much more. Choices were aplenty in golden mile centre down at beach road. We weren't too sure which was the best deal so we took the supposedly well known "grassland" coach that was endorsed by moses lim. I must say that we're quite disappointed when we actually saw the coach on the night itself. Contrary to what I have heard from friends that the coaches have massage chairs and personalised tvs, the coach we got was awfully under equipped

The Hotel

lousy colour scheme..again

The good:

  • Cheap (The whole concert package ie, room+concert tix cost only ard $75 per person)
  • Room is not too cramped, given the amount we have paid
  • Early check in available (thank god)
  • Nice view on 22nd floor

    hotel view

The bad:

  • Mediocre service i must say, the staff cant make up their mind about their policies. Some say we were entitled to freebies, some say we weren't.
  • Lousy facilities ( but what do you expect from erm, $35?)
  • Small bathroom. I wouldn't even call that a bath room. It's a basin, shower cubicle and toilet bowl clustered in the corner of the room.

Rating:

I'll give it a 7/10. Honestly, I was getting ready for something worse than this. For $35, it was a bearable condition to live in, for a day.

The Concert

This is the best shot i managed to get

The good:

  • Good!
  • Great!!
  • Wonderful!!! I didn't know she could sing 'live' so well!
  • Nice choice of songs
  • Interactive. handshake sessions, singalongs, special performances and involves alot with the audience. Miriam's also humourous, joking and playing along with the crowd, livening the atmosphere
  • A very hong kong setting. Everything's in cantonese. Not only the songs, also the sessions in between.
  • A very lengthy encore. There's also a session that fulfills the fan's song requests.
  • Special appearance by Edmund Leung.
  • A very long concert overall. A total of about 2h 45min.

The bad

  • Crowd is not too spontaneous. Relatively quiet.
  • The fans that went up on stage spoke weird cantonese with a funny malaysian accent. Diminishes the HK setting. The crowd also didn't get the joke when miriam tried to make fun of their accent.
  • The bastard behind who kept shouting out of the point things like "Edmund! Where is edmund?", "還水!" in cantonese,(which i think he meant "i want my money back". See? weird cantonese.) and sang out of sync with the tunes. Refused to shut up despite cries for him to do so from other fans around him.
  • Seated abit too far away to get a clear view/shot of those on stage, missed out on the handshakes and interactive stuff because of the damn barricade.

Rating:

9/10! Definitely the highlight of the trip. I wasn't expecting too much initially because of the cheap tix. Maybe an hour plus of singing her new promotional songs, i thought. I was WRONG. It was nearly 3 full blown concert hours of pure entertainment. The only regrets were that we booked the tickets too late and all the good seats were sold out. Getting a price scale 2 ticket instead of the 3 we bought meant that we could have a chance to sit in front of the damn barricade and get a close up picture or possibly a handshake.

Overall

The good:

spooky now

  • Very cool weather. Almost chilling.
  • Compact. Almost everywhere is within walking distance. No need for cabs and other nonsense.
  • If you're an avid gambler or theme park enthusiast, this is the place for you. Lotsa casinos, and theme parks and thrill rides

The bad

long queue to check in early

  • I think this applies throughout m'sia. (no offence, just my honest opinion) The service is poor. Waiting time is very long. People there have a take it easy, the world-will-still turn-even-if-im-slow attitude. Morris waited for a plate of fried maggi mee for 45 min in some foodcourt equivalent. Dont expect much hygiene either.
  • Applies for genting. Nothing to shop for as prices are the same, or even more expensive than singapore. Food is rather costly too.
  • I guess genting lacks a proper theme that makes it a world class tourist attaction. Everything is so jumbled up, and thrown together. One moment you see a classy restaurant, the next moment you see a rock climbing wall, and the next you see booths selling fake gucci bags that are so obviously fake. So damn disorganised, the whole place.
  • Alot of places are stuffy with 2nd hand smoke.
  • If you dont gamble, or are too scared to take thrill rides (like me) dont freaking go there without a purpose. Be warned. You will bore to death. Go sentosa instead.

Go to my flickr site to see more pictures! some of the concert pics are abit blur cos my hands were shaky while the camera was in night mode. The best that i could do though.
